Description

This is my illustration in a style of Drawing more fantasy, influenced in mangas.
  • The drawing of the personage " I used reference only for the pose ", the face of model is not equal, I changed the eyes the nose, only conserved the pespectiva of the face.
  • The Background did not have no referencia, only imagination. ( But it could have been better )
*My search in this work was in making something out of the
realism and of the correct scales, only something beautiful !!

* Drawn and painted totally by hand! ( No computer effect. )
* Pencil colors and acrylic ink !
* Artwork Size: 70cm x 50cm. ( A2 )

The background doesnt seem to match the model. It doesnt have alot of distance or depth in it like the centerpiece. I could use a bit more attention, i think. Also her hands seem to be very big and "manly" looking. Compare the size of her hands against her skull and she would be able to "palm" her own head. They are really pulling my attention away from her overall. I think if those things were tweaked a bit, it would definitely render your overall artpiece a lot more striking.

Its not terrible, but some of those parts are a bit distracting. Good job on this version though.

Her face is great, and the lips are gorgeous. I don't understand how her shoulder/armor thingie fits into the picture though. I agree about the background comments. I don't understand how her boobs are stretching the fabic over the zipper either.

Isn't that the outfit from Bruce Lee's Game of Death, also used in homage to him in Kill Bill Vol 1??

It's refreshing to see works in traditional mediums...(thumbup)

Avatar ultraviolet

WOW. This is really unusual. I love the different textures from the softness of her suit to the almost rust like quality of the shoulder piece and the background. I have large hands so have no problem with the scale as it is interesting to see life painted in it's diversity, and not just within perscribed measuring scales ;) +7/7

It's nice to see you finally use some other texture than smooth rendering. :) However, you may want to work on balancing the rough and the smooth more; the binding tone is all right, but it would help the blending if the textures matched better. That's something that comes with practice, though.

But what you really might want to work on here is composition. The figure is "crowding" the left side, and her pose makes that even more pronounced - as if you'd run out of paper.

And, of course, you've used a commercial photograph again - and never provided the original reference. Which is both against the GFXartist rules and rather lame on artistic merit. ;)

Some people really get anal about the idea of using photo reference, and it's quite amusing taking into consideration the vast number of professional artists I know personally, and the many other I've read about who sell for thousands, hang in galleries, on book covers, etc. use photo reference.

I've never been impressed by someone who claims "I didn't use reference...", because it usually looks like it.

But besides that, and my little rant aside, obviously you did use the model's face in the photo as reference while making a few adjustments of your own (eyes, nose, little in the mouth and hair), but to say you didn't - well, dude, you just open yourself up for attack.

There's no shame in using photo reference, especially if you do representational art... let the critics whimper (they always will) you concentrate on what you want to do and keep improving.

As for this piece, I think the style of the girl and the rest are too different and causes too much disharmony (kind of like paintng part from reference and the other part made up, because that's exactly what it looks like!)

But, I really like the nostalgic "pulp sci-fi" colors and feel of this. Great fun!

First of all I just have to say I think that the grrlie looks good and all.
The face has some of the characteristics from Pampita.

The outfit doesn't look like an outfit, more like a bodypainting(I find it hard to believe that an outfit would fit so perfectly that it would go in under the breasts and then out again...), Also the fact that the zipper "dissapears" between her breasts annoys me even more..

Background: Might aswell have skipped it or put some more effort into it.

And last but not least: Skip the Luis Royo style and find some other style that fits you like a glove(preferrably just fool around until you've found your own, seems to work best for most ppl, but it may take years to find your way there tho...)

Thank you for link of the reference;

* ONE QUESTION: Why they ask for reference only for me, and other artists not?

Avatar Bolivar

 12/28/04 @287

You know, suits made from vinyl will look painted on, and will react in odd ways, so I can excuse the zipper deal. I agree with most, that the styles differ, figure/background. I love the way you handled toning down the nose and enhancing the eyes. She really is a very nice piece. :)

Muy buen trabajo amigo, no le des bola a los que piensan saberlo todo. Eres genial!

Avatar Bolivar

 12/28/04 @291

Oh, and they don't ask for proof of photo references of other artists because, we, the new people, somehow don't clique with the rest. Also, some, when voted Elite think they've the right to overcritique and bash other's visions just because they see the world differently. They simply fail wrap their little minds around the fact that no matter how good or how bad a piece seems, there is always the right of expression, vision and follow-through.

That's why I always say that. "You have the right to critique the technique, but not the vision."

Sigue fuerte amigo, no dejes que te den bajones ni golpes bajos por sólo envidia. Sigue con tu trabajo, vas muy pero muy bien.

"All the artists who draw in the GFX use photo as reference"

Amigo, speak for yourself, not for everyone else, OK?

Besides, using reference is one, copying is another, and lying about not doing it is yet a third thing. The rules say you must link to the photo you used. And I want to see the photo you used, to find out how much of the picture is due to the photo and how much is your own.

(You are not the only one I asked, don't worry.)

Avatar bigkate

I dont doubt your technique, you are very accomplished!

But, as arenhaus said using reference is one thing and straight copying is another. With the acception of bigger eyes the face is the same as the referenced photo, and the pose is EXACT (down to the ribs in the ribcage).

No offence, but this is what i see, and I think there is nothing wrong with using reference.

The part that is not traced looks bad. The perspective on the ships, the trees, etc is not interesting. The shoulder armor part has a weird shape and perspective too.(ie, all the spikes in the same vertica line, inner part bends strangely)

I love the face, but after seeing the reference photo, it's almost identical.
Try to be more original and don't lie to yourself. What you say ("The model is not equal I hanged the eyes the nose, only conserved the pespectiva of the face!";) is not true. You only have to put the images side by side.

Arteyestilo may be out of line in assuming that we all use photo references but that gives no one the right to call him a liar.

Give the guy a break, he expressed himself incorrectly in his description.

GlassShard

 12/29/04 @234

S'cool to use photo reference, but if you're going to be this blatant about copying a pose you should use a photo you've taken yourself. Copying a commercial photo, especially of some model chick, especially of some apparently well-known model chick, is kinda lame.

If you're seriously trying to explore the fantasy art field, be careful with copying such recogniseable imagery. This could get you in trouble were it ever published. Nothing wrong with the big-titted fantasy chick genre (sort of) but get better with drawing out of your head so you look a little more professional as you enter into it. Don't assume that just because YOU can't conjure this kind of image without reference, other artists can't either. That would be a mistake :)

And Amigo means friend! Somos todos amigos aquí! Yay!

Amen Sistah friend!

I appologies if what I said sounded harsh to you Artyestilo. You do have a very nice drawing technique, and your dipiction of the girl is nice. You just need to be more careful to reference what you use so that you dont get into trouble.

The picture you used is very well known and you should give it more credit in your description of the art.

Avatar carpenoctem

 12/29/04 @687

After looking at the beautiful 200x150 all the time, I just had to view the full-size ^^. The girl looks beautiful. Love the sweet expression (looks way better than the expression in your reference photo) on her face and the shading is wonderful.
A little crit: somehow the composition looks a bit disharmonic to me (having a bit more room to the right might have been nice) and the background makes everything seem a bit tight. Maybe that's because the colors of the bg are almost of the same value as the foreground.
Anyway, cool work =)

@Fealasy: Uh, that was sarcasm, wasn't it? ^^;

What the hell is happening here? This is very good work, period!

Come on people, let's keep this site the nicer one. All people here are involved in some kind of 'art' and like to create stuff. People spend a lot of time creating their artwork and just want to share with the rest. And we all know you throw something of yourself in the artwork. Maybe it's a good idea to be somewhat easier on people, right? It's always easy to say something bad about artwork. Just give some constructive critique, please.

"elite means to me you have to be absolutely perfect every time you post"

Yeah, right. ;) "Elite" means that lots of visitors voted for a particular work at a particular moment. Whether it was due to the work being perfect or due to it combining a naked girl with a Star Wars stormtrooper is irrelevant: "elite" is a measurement of momentary popularity, not of perfection. So don't have high expectations, and you won't be disappointed.

Besides, anyone has a right to experiment and fail, "elite" or not. Everyone must answer for their actions, "elite" or not.

That said, you won't find skill-less "elite" artists here. They all know their way with the medium, even though not all are "perfect".

Avatar MsMichelleLynn

 12/30/04 @543

My my my. What a can of worms has been opened here. I must agree that if one is to use such a strong reference to another artwork, that he or she should make that known and also post the original. It does seem to me that the face and body of this artwork has been pretty near copied to a tee and then other things were altered or added on. Personally, I prefer when artists have their own unique style which they develop with their own hand. Yes, every artist will be influenced by their own favorite artists or artwork as is the case in the music industry as well.
To me, this piece however, is dangerously close not not being original at all ... at least not the face and body. The backgound is marvelous and I will assume it to be wholly original.
I'm no artist, I take pictures. I copy nature without having to reference the photos I take other than to thank my God that he has given me such beautiful creatures to photograph.
I just hope that we can go on from this, put it in the past, and learn from our errors.
